Allied Waste Corporate Profile
Allied Waste of the Twin Cities is proud of our rich, vibrant,
59-year local history of keeping the Twin Cities clean.
It started back in 1948 as Woodlake Sanitation, with one truck and
the vision of always exceeding customer expectations. Woodlake Sanitation
continued to grow and decided to team with Browning Ferris Industries
(BFI) in the early 1970’s.
Back in 1966 BFI was formed in Houston, TX with one truck and the
same vision. The two companies were a perfect fit. BFI was one of
the earliest companies to experiment with the recycling of paper
waste, using its own collection supply that could then be treated,
shredded, and delivered to papermakers. BFI grew to the 2nd largest
waste services company in the U.S. by acquiring other companies,
leveraging economy of scales, to provide the best service at the
best value.
In 1999 Allied Waste Industries, Inc. purchased BFI moving it from
the 4th largest US waste services provider to 2nd. BFI became a wholly
owned subsidiary of Allied Waste.
Allied Waste of the Twin Cities is committed to providing excellent
service to all our customers. We have been serving our communities
with local pride and ingenuity for decades. Regardless of our size,
we are and always will be a local business. More than half of our
operating management team consists of former owners and second/third-generation
industry professionals. We are your neighbors, friends, and family.
The Twin Cities team knows our business, our communities, and is
proud of the service we provide. We are committed to exemplary customer
service and efficient, innovative solutions that respect and safeguard
Minnesota’s public health and natural resources. We help our
team succeed by providing company-wide resources, including technical
support, best practices, safety training, and direction in regulated
areas.
Our commitment to Minnesota’s environment is unwavering. We
are the only Twin Cities waste services company to own and operate
two recycling facilities. |
Our North Minneapolis
and Inver Grove Heights recycling facilities combined in 2006 to
separate, process, and recycle 163,758 tons of material. If stacked
in cubic yards one on another, we recycled enough material to stretch
10.5 miles into the sky. Our Inver Grove Heights Landfill operates
a landfill gas to energy plant that provides enough energy to power
over 7,000 local homes and reduces greenhouse gas emissions equivalent
to removing 100,000 cars from the road. Locally we employ over 450
team members.
Nationally, Allied Waste picks up the trash of about 10 million
residential, commercial, and industrial customers throughout the
U.S. Our vast collection, recycling, and landfill operations include
a network of 304 collection companies, 161 transfer stations, 168
active landfills, and 57 recycling facilities in 37 states.
